Tropical Smoothie Café Kicks Off Summer Fun with 4th Annual National Flip Flop Day

Smoothie and Sandwich Chain Launches Month-Long Promotion Dedicated to Raising Funds for Children with Life-Threatening Illnesses and Their Families

DESTIN , FLA. – Tropical Smoothie Café is preparing to flip the switch on summer with its fourth annual National Flip Flop Day that will give the first 500 customers who visit any of the chain’s 285-plus locations wearing flip-flops on June 18, 2010 a free 24-ounce Jetty Punch smoothie.

Coinciding with the nationwide event will be a month-long fundraising effort that begins May 24, 2010, lasting through June 27, 2010, with funds raised benefiting children with life-threatening illnesses. The goal this year is to raise upwards of $325,000 in donations in an effort to send more than 200 families to Camp Sunshine , a retreat in Maine that provides respite, support, joy and hope to its visitors.

“We prepare all year to make sure this event is a success for those who matter most, the kids,” said Jim Valentino, president and COO for Tropical Smoothie Café. “Last year Tropical Smoothie Café raised $275,000 and sent 180 families to Camp Sunshine , a feat that we are motivated to dramatically top this year.”

Customers visiting Tropical Smoothie Café will have the opportunity to purchase paper flip flops posted throughout the store as well as donate online at and Additionally, cell phone savvy consumers can text their donation to CAMP at 20222 to donate $10.00. That charge will be made directly to their monthly phone bill.

“We have made it more convenient for customers who want to help but may not have the time to stop in and donate,” said Valentino. “With National Flip Flop Day as the centerpiece of our aggressive fundraiser, we look forward to seeing people out and about in their flip flops feeling good about their donation and enjoying the summer fun with Tropical Smoothie Café.”

This is the third consecutive year Tropical Smoothie Café is partnering with Camp Sunshine for its National Flip Flop Day celebration. The funds send families on a week-long retreat where they can escape from the stress of their everyday lives. Located in Casco , Maine , along Sebago Lake , Camp Sunshine offers recreational, medical and counseling services at no cost to individuals and their families. Since 1984, Camp Sunshine has helped more than 16,000 families from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds better cope and manage the child’s illness.
