US Olympic Ctr - US airforce Academy + Chapel - LA To AK Vacation

May 5

Since we left home on the 3rd, Monday night, we've covered 1150 miles. If we continue like that we'll definitely make the Ferry in Prince Rupert, Canada to Skagway, Alaska!

After we left the Garden of the Gods, we continued our tour around Colorado Springs and drove past The US Olympics Complex (wonders what all they do there) I did want to go in, but alas we cannot stop everywhere.

We saw a velodrome, where they do the Olympic bicycle training. That was quite fun to see since dh and I have never seen one before.

We drove a bit past Cheyenne Mountain. You might already know that famous story. We didn't attempt to go to the gate for entrance or anything since I'm sure they are not giving out tours to tourists ;) uh oh .I just called myself a tourist!

We also drove to the entrance of Pike's Peak, but didn't do the limited drive half way up since it was close after about 6 miles due to snow.

All that touring around was burning time to get to the US Air force Academy to see the soldiers and other delightful stuff. You should know our family is all about the military and we have family members serving and have for a lifetime.

We were also told that if you timed it just right, at noon when the soldiers went for chow (lunch), they'd come out in formation.

We got there in time.

We saw their chapel with it's amazing design and also a movie about the air force Academy which was quite interesting and make me want to be 20 again to join up. I've always wanted to be in the military but somehow time and opportunity was not open to me.

Oh yes we saw alot of interesting things but the one highlight we wanted, did not happen.  The soldiers came out alright but hustled to lunch instead of doing their 'thang'. Why? It was too windy and too cold! Yes it was!

I wasn't too disappointed because I understand stuff like that.

It also reminds me of that story with the wind and the sun seeing who could get the man to take off his coat first :) Anyone else know that story?
It was a fun visit and we continue our vaca-tour...

Our vacation journey posts will be on the right sidebar of my blog.

It sounds like you had a lot of fun. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate for you at the Air Force Academy.

I remember about the wind and the sun competing to get the man to take his coat off.

You got some great pics of the chapel at the Air Force Academy. Did you know the running joke is the 17 spires represent the 12 apostles and the 5 chiefs of staff?

You had the best vacation, but sorry about those soldiers being so hungry and ruining it! lol

It sounds like an awesome trip. Great pictures, btw.

I am so sorry you didn't get to see the soldiers doing their thing.
