Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self. Cyril Connolly (1903 - 1974)

To Love And Be Loved As Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

  1. Annabel Lee is my favorite Edgar Allan Poe work, there was a time I could recite it word for word.

    Yes I do enjoy poetry.

    Someone once offered to write a song for me, does that count?

  2. I love that poem, so romantic and passionate.
    I love poetry like this, and descriptions that I can follow. I don't like certain ones that are so far out that you have to try and figure out what the author is trying to say.
    I have in the past received verbal and written poems but by amateurs, they never got famous. Smiles.

  3. This is one of my favorite poem of all time. I love poetry that gives me a feeling or an image that I can feel or see in my mind.

    I write poems, and no one has ever written one for me :-(

    Have a wonderful weekend, Colette!

  4. This is a wonderful poem! I used to read lots of poetry books, and my son has written one for me before. Just four sweet little lines..

  5. I like beautiful poetry, but not abstract poems. I find those too difficult to detangle in my mind and miss the point.

    No, I don't write poetry. My brain just can't work in that pattern for some reason.

  6. I love it! I also liked the Corinthians scripture you placed in with it - a fitting duo.
    I used to write a lot of poetry but my books take over all my writing time now.
    I've had poetry and even a song written for me.

  7. That is so sweet!
    You have a wonderful weekend! :)

  8. I love writing poetry. It is such a great way to examine the overflow of one's feelings. I love this poem.

    I have had poetry written for me, but where is he now? :-0
