What's With These Christmas In July Campaigns?

They are everywhere now and I don't like seeing a store doing year round sales. It doesn't make sense to me and it makes me not trust that store's prices.

What do you think?

Has Christmas creep gotten totally out of hand? Major merchants like Eddie Bauer, Toys R Us and Target are presently offering previews on select products at holiday prices. The question is if they're forcing a six-month ramp-up to Black Friday or actually have ulterior motives.

A recently distributed email from Pier 1 promoted Christmas in July sales saying, "You can now scratch 'get an early start on Christmas' off your to-do list. Preview holiday fun before it even gets to our stores." The suggested preview, however, isn't necessarily designed for consumer savings. Its goal is to help merchants gird their loins for holiday shopping.

Major retailers are actually just testing out their processes to make sure they'll work come the holiday rush. Merchants want to make sure their systems won't crash or cause problems at a strategic time. They're also testing special offers, like free shipping, to see how well they'll fly with the public.

This same method was used last year by Macy's, which promoted free shipping on all orders for a limited period, an offer the department store had never made before -- or since.

Enjoy these early offers now or wait until the real Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Free Shipping Day.

  2. I'm like blue, The idea of Christmas in July is ridiculous. Of course marketing has no rules and they will do whatever they can to sell more.

  3. I'm definitely with Blue and Whoz...I can't even THINK about Christmas and the holiday season and shopping because it sets me to panic O.o

I HATE seeing holiday items in Summer-It just ruins it for me. You should be seeing plastic buckets with shovels, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and other Summery items rather then ornaments, decorations, and ANYTHING pertaining to the holidays!

Like when they put Halloween stuff out WAY before ...

  5. What really gets me is stores who have "amazing" sales every single weekend. I would you even shop on a weekday anymore? Plus, are their prices so high that they have to discount constantly? I just don't get it.
