Old As A Child New As An Adult

It's amazing the things you will learn are not real and how you will outgrow them, but still have the memories.

When I was much younger, I was told that at the hour of the new year, I should be doing something I love because that will be how my year will be the for the rest of the year.
So if you are angry, guess what?
or sad, having a fight, depressed, scared etc.

I actually tried doing even just one thing on that hour to help me through the year. I smiled. In my situation, that was all I could do. There were no parties or hanging out with friends or being with a family.  So I smiled. I pushed away the feeling of loneliness and smiled just for that one hour and watched other happy people on tv.

Now I'm all grown up and I know how silly that was to do those things and listened to that belief, but somehow it helped even just a little.

I don't make resolutions. I make one. To grow as a person. That's it. So I'm always working on me. It's amazing how things and people and change can affect the human heart and if you aren't careful, one day you'll be a stranger to yourself.
So I try to ensure I'm steering my heart, head and emotions so that they don't get pulled away into stringy directions and leave me hallow.
Protect your heart.
Tis precious to who you are and will be.

Happy New Year to you dear ones.

Seasonal Stress + Peace - Aloha!

1. Were you stressed or peaceful on Christmas?
2. Did you feel thought of and loved on Christmas?
 THIS

What is your Foodie Crave for this week?

And a little about me :)
1. What's the oldest piece of clothing in your closet?

A cute little black blouse I've had since 1999 or 2000. Yes it still fits. But it's going to tears now.
Clearance! Allen B.® Lace Trim Babydoll
2. How many random blog readers have you met?

None so far. I don't have the practicality to travel. I have no money and young kids.
3. Do you let your kids stay up till midnight on New Years Eve? (Or, if you don't have kiddos yet, did you get to stay up until midnight as a child?)

Yes I do let them stay up very late on New Year's Eve and watch fireworks, eat and sing and play.
4. What are the gas prices where you live?

Last I checked it was normal. Not sure if it's back in the WTH range as yet. See it's Christmas break and I"m not on the road every seconds anymore. That's for when I'm bussing the boy to school.

5. What is one resolution that you know you should do but are too afraid to try?

Start studying for my degree.

After School Snacking Tips For Busy Families

School begins in just a week for us. I'm already gearing up for the daily lunches I make for my son and providing healthy after school snacks for him to have enough energy for homework and after school programs.

I love Farm Rich pizza slices because they are delicious, healthy and easy for snacks and lunches for my son for school and after school.
They are perfect for other snack times too and often, I settle with it and a salad for my lunch.

It's perfect together with vegetables. My kids seem to eat more vegetables while eating the pizza slices because I showed them how to bite one pizza and then bite a piece of carrot, or tomato etc and tasting how great it is together!

Farm Rich have many alternatives for everyone in your family and these products are definitely a hit for the dining table.

Farm Rich wants to share some After School Snacking Tips for us Busy Families.

MOMS OFFER EASY TIPS FOR INCLUDING WHOLESOME SNACKS IN BUSY SCHEDULES

School is back in session and that means more scheduling and nutritional challenges for kids – and moms – on the go. Between soccer, ballet, homework, Scouts and the myriad of other responsibilities facing today’s kids, moms can use all the help available in making sure these busy children get to their activities on time and with enough energy to succeed.
“School-age children – especially those in middle and high school – have so much on their plates in terms of activities and homework that it’s a real juggling act to balance it all,” says Jennifer Meetz, director of marketing for  Farm Rich, the frozen appetizer and snack brand.  “It’s a well-known fact that there are significant benefits for kids who are well rested,  active and eating a balanced diet, but the challenge is finding the time and wholesome options to make sure they are fueling their bodies and minds properly.”

First lady Michelle Obama frequently acknowledges the pressures facing families today as part of her platform to bring awareness to children’s health, nutrition and fitness.  "We are living in a time where we just don't have enough time. People are rushed. They're overworked, overscheduled...But the thing that I want people to understand in this campaign is that families can make small, manageable changes in their lives that can have pretty significant impacts," said Mrs. Obama during the   “Let's Move” live web chat.
Learn some facts
So what’s a busy parent to do?  Farm Rich talked to moms across the country recently to discover their real-life tips for working wholesome snacks into the chaotic schedules of school-age kids and their families.

  • Start the Week Off Right. For Bethanne Latkso of Worchester, Mass., organization is the key.  “I have two kids, a busy husband, and I’m designing my own jewelry line, so I don’t have time for frequent trips to the grocery store. Instead, every Saturday, I map out the week’s activities and plan our meals and snacks around that.”  Latkso says in addition to saving time during the week, planning also helps eliminate poor food choices.  “Because I’m eliminating impulse buying, I make better food choices – everything from buying more fresh fruits and vegetables, to buying better snacks for my kids.”

  • Mini-Meal Replacement.  For Leah Welch of Brandon, Fla., a mother of two boys ages 10 and 12, snacks that serve as a mini-meal are a lifesaver. “We are constantly going between baseball, soccer and chess,” explains Welch. “Just before I drive them to an activity, I’ll pop something like Farm Rich Mini Quesadillas into the microwave. They eat them on the way to the game and they’re good to go until we can get home for dinner. It’s a much better choice than fast food.”
  • Sneak in Wholesome Snacks When They Least Expect It.  “When my teens are having a study group or a sleepover, instead of letting them load up on sugary soda and potato chips, I try to sneak in a snack that’s more nutritionally sound and the brain food they need,” says Nicole Mills, an Atlanta mom of three.  If teens balk at serving friends fresh veggies and dip, parents can try Farm Rich  Cheese Sticks or Mozzarella Bites made with real mozzarella cheese.  Real mozzarella cheese is a good source of calcium and protein, but they don’t have to know that!

  • Make Healthy Snacking Convenient.  Kim Griffin, a business owner with two teenagers, says because her children are at the age where they can prepare snacks for themselves, “I stock the freezer with things that are easy to heat and eat. They like being able to reach into the freezer to grab a snack they can heat in the microwave and be ready to eat in just minutes.”  With frozen appetizers like Farm Rich  Mini Bacon Cheeseburgers or Mini Philly Cheese Steaks, they can have a filling and better-for-you snack in just minutes.  Or, suggests Griffin, put some  Farm Rich Meatballs in the Crock-Pot, let simmer all day and bowl the kids over with the aroma when they walk in the door from school.

In light of last year’s snacking study out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, tips like these are important for helping give kids snack choices that are better for them, despite the chaos of an active lifestyle. According to the UNC study, kids are snacking more than ever before – in fact, nearly 98 percent of children 2-18 snack between meals.
Get Active
"Kids still eat three meals a day, but they're also loading up on high-calorie junk food that contains little or no nutritional value," said study leader Barry Popkin, Ph.D.  He also noted that salty, fatty snacks, such as chips and crackers, accounted for the largest increase in the types of snacks children were eating during the three-decade period reviewed in the study.

I wasn't sure what kind of clothing I was going to receive from CheapesTees.com, but I was pleasantly surprised.
They will dress the whole family and that including accessories such as hats, socks etc.
I love their embroidery selections!

We know how fast kids grow out of clothing, so if you are pressed, take a look at this website!

I choose the Bella Ladies' Long Sleeve V-Neck Tee.
Bella Ladies' Long Sleeve V-Neck Tee
It's very light and mostly for summer even though it has long sleeves. Wear it with a jacket and you are great for business, or a pair of jeans or pants for casual-go-anywhere look. I love casual and easy pieces. As a mom I need nice little tops with color to grab and go or stow in my bag for emergencies :)
Bella Ladies' Long Sleeve V-Neck Tee. Made with a sheer mini rib knit. Lightweight, 98% combed and ringspun cotton and 2% spandex for stretch. Features a longer body length and slim feminine fit.
My son received the Jerzees Youth 50/50 Fleece Hooded Sweatshirt in red.
I choose youth medium for a bigger size just in case it would have been too small and I'm so glad I did. The moment I showed it to him, he wanted to wear it to school! Red looks great on him and I'm glad he likes his sweatshirt.

Gorton's Seafood Review

Seafood should be a very important part of our diet and according to MyPlate.gov, we are supposed to be eating seafood at least twice per week. Gorton's make it easy to add seafood to our diet.

I love to eat fish. I love it cooked, fried, steamed, all sort of ways done. I especially like when it's so well done that I can eat the bones. Usually this is when it's fried and you can have it with rice and gravy and salad, or with dumplings and Jamaican cooking. YUM.

With Gortons, you can bake or pan-fry and enjoy it with any side dish and salad.

Gorton's Seafood makes it easy for me to do quick snacks and lunches for my children. I sent my son to school with Gorton's fishsticks a few weeks ago. He loved it and it was different from the regular menu. I love finding new foods to add to his lunch menu.

Gorton's Seafood is very delicious and healthy and perfect for big or small meals for the whole family!

I can't wait to try their fish tacos!

If you want want a great recipe or just a change in menu, check out the Gorton's Galley for wonderful recipes.

I know my husband would love this:

He Is One Step Ahead

I knew the husband wanted to attend Christmas Eve services. It's always good to gather together and hear God's message and see a lovely play with your family.
I got the kids ready and sent them out the door.

I wasn't having a good footing with my husband and it was just hard to be in the same vehicle with him and I just did not feel like smiling with anyone. You get those days too right?

I did go by myself. I hate driving at night, but it was a safe trip to the church and I wasn't worried about being late or missing anything. I relaxed and felt alright going alone.

While in church, I chose to stand by the door. Nothing wrong with that as others were too, but I felt not at rest as I did before. Your spirit can tell when things are not well.

It was a lovely play and service and candles were lit as the last song was sung.  The kids came rushing towards me and I gave them the coats I had brought for them because it was cold out and their father hadn't taken their coats, and turned and hurried away to my vehicle.

I was rude. It's never alright with my heart when I'm rude.

While driving home, I prayed and asked for safe travel and for God to help me with my heart so that I would not become bitter or spiteful while I'm hurting.

Not even a mile down the road and a van came out right in front of me. It fish-tailed viciously on the wet street, trying not to lose control, trying not to get hit by me, trying not to hit the person in front of them and trying not to end up in the ditch.

I was not shaken or anything. I had enough space to slow down gently and wait / prayed for the person to be safe.

I have no idea why someone would choose to come out on the street like that with traffic going 50mph on a rainy night.

I hope they made it home safe and I hope that was a good lesson in patience.

But most of all I knew that God was one step ahead of me that night.

Christmas services went much better. I went with my husband and children and we sat together, greet together and worshiped together.
It's how it should be.

Things are still not well with me and my husband, but I'm still praying for a heart that will not be bitter or spiteful.

Teaching Is...

Moments that inspire and motivate teacher to make a difference
Teaching Is: Moments that Inspire and Motivate Teachers to Make a Difference
I think most teachers are such big hearts walking around. Think about it. I have one or two children and they drive me nuts most of the time, but a teacher has 22 or more children MOST OF THE DAY and they somehow survive and manage to impart knowledge and learning techniques in our children. Just imagine it for a minute and you'll see the hugeness of it all.

This book is a quick read and it will touch your heart and sometimes draw you to tears because you can't not remember when you were a student...or if now you are a teacher or parent who volunteers and interact with teachers.

Very good little book. Easy read for the busy mind.
Teaching is made up of a series of moments. Moments that are memorable disappear lal too quickly, almost unnoticed. Other moment linger, but are soon forgotten.
Memorable moments are the fuel for a teacher's passion to teach, and to continue to teach when the challenges are almost overwhelming and seemingly insurmountable.
This book is a series of moment that inspire and motivate teachers to make a difference in spite of insurmountable challenges.

The book is a five year labor of love for Glavac. He captures and offers up the indelible magic moments that teachers experience day in and day out. It seeks to break through the walls of mis-understanding, misguided criticisms, concerns of high pay, teacher performance, accountability, and untold working hours.

Teaching Is... is filled with short parables from his own experience. With words and pictures the book highlights the power of teacher to inispire, motivate and make a difference:
Teaching Is...
After telling the class that you grew up wihtout a microwave, a student asks "How did you reheat your food?" (You're tempted to say, "Over the fire!")
There is  special reassurance that come sform experiencing the personal wisdom of an experiened educator who has walked the path.
Teaching is...
Being remembered and thanked at the end of the year...with a handwritten note on a scrap piece of wrinkled paper.
He shows that what teachers give goes beyond the curriculum. He shares and celebrates waht true education is all about.
Teaching Is...
Telling an elementary student that one day she will become an Olympic athlete...and she does as a member of 2 Olympic teams.
You cannot help but feel refreshed and invigorated by the unbounded optimism and truthful insight.
Teaching Is...
Seeing students leaning forward in their seats, listening to your every word, following your each and every instruction, staring at yuo intently, mouths and eyes wide open...the AHA moment...something every teacher strives for.
Here is a very special, singularly unique, and beautiful way to learn, appreciate and understand the dedication of teachers and why they devote their lives to making a difference to the lives of the children they touch.

7 Tips On How To Manage Your Holiday Debt

I hope you don't have any holiday debts, but if you do:

Before the holidays there was endless advice about setting a budget and sticking to a shopping list. Those who ignored the wisdom shared by experts will be in for a shock when credit card and bank statements arrive in the mail.

According to a  Consumer Reports poll, six percent of us are still paying off holiday debts from 2010. That means any new purchases racked up over the past holiday season will inflate those interest charges and make paying down the old and new balances more difficult and expensive.
If the bottom line on your bills is looking ugly, it's time to get a financial-management makeover. Consider these tips for balancing your holiday debt:

1. Double and Triple Up
Multiply your credit card minimum payments two or three times to reduce the amount of interest you'll end up paying. Merely meeting the minimum means you'll never see bottom.

2. Now's the Time to Negotiate
Talk to your credit card company about negotiating a better rate on interest, fees and other expenses. If your interest rate is above 15 percent and they won't negotiate, it may be time to transfer much of the balance to a lower-cost card. Just make sure you pay off the debt before the interest rate climbs again.

3. Go On a No-spend Diet
Stick those credit cards in the freezer, if you have to, but do what it takes to avoid impulse shopping sprees. Better yet, give them to a trusted friend or family member for safekeeping.

4. Get Couponing
Using coupons for necessary purchases not only saves you money, but the practice helps you make more educated purchasing decisions. You can find online and printable coupons for thousands of stores on  CouponSherpa.com, or download their  mobile app for instant access to coupons while you shop.

5. Stick to Cash
There's something about parting with greenbacks that makes us less likely to spend. Keep a budgeted amount on hand and stay away from the cards. Using the envelope system is expecially helpful in tracking your cash spending while working toward financial goals.

6. Cut Back on Luxuries
You've had your fun during the holidays; now it's time to get serious. Cut out the restaurants, nail salon and triple shot mocha latte until the bills are under control. Of course, too strict of an economic diet is as easy to break as a weight-loss regimen. So figure in an occasional, small splurge to keep you going.

7. Set Small Goals
Don't try to do everything at once. If paying off credit cards in three months means going hungry, you're biting off more than you can chew. Set smaller, obtainable goals and you'll appreciate the final results more. For those with multiple credit cards with high balances, try paying down one card at a time to feel that sense of accomplishment needed to push on to the next goal.

8. Meet With a Financial Planner
If you're barely treading financial water, it's time to get some assistance. A professional financial planner can help you establish a reasonable plan that won't leave you paying off debts until next Christmas. You can find a qualified guide through the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards website or you might check for non-profit assistance.
