I told my husband that I'd prefer to purchase a bunkbed because when we have more children we'll be needing more beds. He didn't think that was necessary. Can you say stand off?
We did purchase a normal size bed for the five year old, but it's big enough that it can serve her until she is out of the house as an adult.
But I still want the bunk bed.

I like bunk bed as it saves space in the bedroom, but my son prefers double bed instead. So that is what he got, and a friend can also share his when he comes over for the night!
