Introducing children to non-fiction: Linnea in Monet's Garden
My children love to read. We get so many books from the library, that sometimes I feel like we are robbing them to start out own library. One day the librarian said something that comforted me. She said that the more books we take, the longer they stay in business! WOW! I loved hearing this and my children and I devour books. But I want my kids to also enjoy and understand quality books that are non-fiction. I'm happy to find the Linnea in Monet's Garden. I have not yet finished reading it, but I intend to and will also share about it on goodreads.
Linnea in Monet's Garden
25 years ago, U.S. readers were introduced to Linnea, a high-spirited girl on a whirlwind trip through art history. Since then, the Linnea in Monet’s Garden has become a beloved favorite of families, critics and teachers, introducing children to impressionism through a charming first-person account. Now, after several years out of print, the beloved story is returning to the U.S. to delight a new generation.
When Linnea travels to Monet’s garden in Giverny, she finds herself stepping into a masterpiece. Young readers follow Linnea as she visits the painter’s water-lily wonderland, stands on the famous Japanese bridge, watches the sun rise over the Seine, and comes face-to-face with the colorful and lively world of art.
Along with lighthearted and airy watercolors, the pages are filled with reproductions of the paintings, period photographs, and notes from Linnea’s scrapbook, which let us experience Monet’s life and work through her eyes. Beautifully presented in a new enlarged trim size, this anniversary edition also includes updated information for family activities in Paris.
With their adoption of the new Common Core State Standards, schools have repeatedly highlighted the need for children’s non-fiction. Perfectly timed for this new emphasis, Linnea in Monet’s Garden is exuberant introduction to travel, art, and the wide-eyed wonder that they inspire.
In a few days, my kids school will have a book sale. It would be nice to see books like these in the catalog.
