Progressive Snapshot Good Driving Challenge

I did the Progressive Snapshot Good Driving Challenge.

It is an interesting little device. It reminded me that I needed to behave on the streets, but really, there were times when there was no helping it. I had to defend my vehicle and that includes breaking suddenly or speeding up or swerving. Of course then I'd hear the beep - beep, which let's me know they just logged that information and I'd be penalized. Well not really penalized, but still it's not good for my record.

It is easy to plug into your vehicle and drive. It doesn't bulge or bug and you only know it's there when you turn your vehicle on and when you have to drive defensively on the roadways.

I am a very careful driver because I know how in an instant things can change, because of being distracted or not being wise while behind the wheel. However it is hard to plan for everyone around you. And you know 'those drivers.'

As a mom my car trips revolve around my children and their schedules. I'm glad things are close enough to us, however, they are still too far away for walking. I noticed on my weekly reports, the device would recommend I carpool. Maybe I'm the carpool :)
And apparently customers using the device drive more than 30 or so miles each day. I only do a few miles on each trip to drop kids off and pick them up and go to the library, and after school activities etc.

I understand how this could help the customer get a rate that fits your lifestyle, but I can see a few cons about the program.

I do not know if this is  a feature of the device, but I noticed my car would alarm on it's own when I had it parked for a couple hours. I was freaked out at first and then I wondered if the progressive team was just using the device to check if the device was still plugged into the vehicle, or if the vehicle was  still in drive or parked. I would like to understand why this happened. Usually if my vehicle is alarming, I immediately assume someone is trying to break into it.

I was hoping to get my quote, but I've tried it a couple times and all I get is the 'please wait...'
I hope I'll get it soon so I can share it along with this review! I just want to KNOW how well terrible I did!

The two best places I traveled with my snapshot, would be to church and to the soccer field. Why? Because they are farther away from my home and I get to really be able to drive for a period of time with the device. Prove my skills that I'm not a brake freak :) The weekly reviews kept saying I was breaking hard.

My kids were fascinated with the device! I explained to them how it worked. They had fun reminding me to behave :)

Here is how it works :

“Snapshot®, and what is sure to follow in its evolution, is a meaningful start toward personalized insurance pricing based on real–time measurement of your driving behavior— the statistics of one.” —Glenn Renwick, 2011 Letter to the Shareholders

Snapshot Fact Sheet
Content and/or other value provided by our partner, Progressive.

PROGRESSIVE’S MODEL – ‘SNAPSHOT®’ With Progressive’s patented data collection program—called Snapshot—customers plug a small device into the on-board diagnostic (OBD) port in their car. The device collects and transmits data to Progressive on the time of day the car is driven, hard brakes and total mileage. Progressive then factors the data into the customer’s rate calculation. After 30 days, the company can offer the customer a discount of up to 30 percent.

Snapshot is now available to policyholders in 42 states and the District of Columbia. And having seen the predictive power of this data, Progressive has launched a major expansion of Snapshot. Drivers now don’t need to be a current Progressive customer to enroll in a 30-day free trial, during which they can learn whether their personal driving habits qualify them for additional savings of up to 30 percent off Progressive’s auto insurance rates. They can then compare that price to the rate they currently pay with their existing insurer.

Drivers who test drive Snapshot can track their potential savings on a daily basis during their trial.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CONSUMERS As driving data becomes more available, rates will become far more individualized—and fairer—than they are today.

Did you get to testdrive the snapshot?
Would you?

The Dog Ate It! - Aloha!

Should Schools Abolish Homework?

I think they should get homework for revision and practice. We learn by repetition.
However it should not be more than an hour.
When children get home, they need time to play and be with their family before it's time to go to bed and begin the routine all over again.

Kids get so much homework these days, hours spent working, no time to play (why are they getting unhealthy?), no family time and then by the time you know it: dinner time, bedtime, and back to school.

Make Your Facebook Timeline Come To Life - 6 Tips!

We are bloggers. We use facebook. Let's learn how to do it wisely so we can maximize our effect and capitalize on our audience.

1. Include a photo.
Photos carry the most “weight” according to Facebook’s edge-rank, which means status updates that include a photo will likely be shown to more of your fans.

2. Timing is good.
Figure out what time of day you are likely to get the most interaction on your page and then share the things you want to be seen most at that time.

3. Ask a question.
Posing a question or including a Call to Action is a great way to go. Be sure your questions only require one word or a short phrase to answer.
Everyone is busy and only have so much time to share with you and their other fans. Let your fans know exactly what you want them to do (e.g. LIKE your update), be sure to specifically write, “Click ‘LIKE’ if you agree!”.

4. Moderation is key.
Do not saturate your fans with too much all at once. Put a half an hour or so between shares on your timeline. Give fans time to interact and share,

5. Include a link.
If you are telling your fans about a new product or blog post you want them to check out, be sure to include the URL (bit.ly - use it to shorten long links) in your update.

6. Tag relevant pages in your status updates. If your update mentions another business or organization, be sure to tag them in your status update. You might find new fans this way, plus that business might take an interest in you or some of their fans.

See this Facebook status update that includes some of the tips mentioned above.

A Diary's House: Where True Love Endures Book Tour and Kindle fire Contest

Not only are you getting 5 autograph books! The author is also giving away a Kindle Fire! So you have books and something to read more in :)

Come have fun entering!

A Diary's House: Where True Love Endures

A Diary’s House is about adventure, lost love, and the hope that dreams, even those in the final years of life, can at last prevail. It is of a young boy’s attempt to become a man, the once-lost secrets of a diary, a sweeping romance which transcends time and place. It is more than a boy’s journey into manhood, but the mysteries of so many lives unknowingly intertwined, now brought together in a climatic ending; all from the engrossing world embedded in a forgotten diary; a diary of a woman.

Born in the vast and looming mountains of North Carolina during the 1870’s, Landon Hampshire always remembered the folklore and legendary tales his father told him during his early childhood; about the people of the Kituhwa (Cherokee) and the birth of this tribal nation – an enchanting story he could never forget.

Incorporating the aid of an eccentric old French trapper (old man Montague), Landon and his friends set out on an adventure, their initial intention is to discover treasure and become men. But what Landon will eventually come to discover is more than he ever bargained for. Landon didn't realize his boyhood adventure would yield the incredible journey he ultimately experiences - going down the mysterious and mystical Randola River.

At the base of the river is an island even more mysterious than the Randola itself. The island releases many of its mysterious, yet even many more are created when Landon discovers, on the island, a diary of a young woman who lived forty years prior during the 1830’s (Trail of Tears). The diary entries are hopeful, though haunting. It reveals, in intimate detail, the life and dreams of this very special young girl who is turning into a woman of beauty and adventure, her love for a Cherokee boy, and the trials she will ultimately face.

Her story unfolds through the reading of her diary, and Landon suddenly finds himself caught up in a sweeping, empowering world of re-invention and ultimate redemption.

C. David Murphy
I am a writer; first and foremost. Anyone who reads my works will instantly know this. I have found no greater joy on this earth than to be close to God and nature; exploring the serenity of landscapes, waterfalls, epic mountains, meadows and grasslands. To sit on those spots of earth and write to where my imagination will take me yields a tremendous amount of peace and serenity.. To create characters with true and genuine emotions, feel their heartbeat thru every word I write; their trails, their hopes and ambitions; to breathe life into their eyes and see their soul become one with me and the reader is absolutely amazing.

I simply love to create on that venue and canvas; to affect change in the lives of others. It is my hope, when someone picks up my stories and reads the full weight of them, that somehow I have affected change in their lives, brought them to places they could never have imagined before, and moved them to believe in humanity again – to go out into the world and create ‘goodwill towards all’. The Diary’s House is C David Murphy’s first digitally published novel. He is also the author of two Shakespearean-style genre plays In the Years of the Ages and Hildengrass.

He is currently finalizing his next novel, When Tomorrow Never Comes and The Chronicles of Good and Evil – Dracula’s Lair / The Darkest Tower, both due out later this year. Also, the sequel to A Diary’s House is in the works – The Long Journey Home due out the first part of 2013.

I Am Forgiven

Whenever I am rolling in sin and begin to berate myself. I have to remind myself that I can never be perfect. The Lord is doing his thing inside my heart bit by bit and with life, I'll learn and I'll get better and one day, be perfected in him.

Don't let your struggles paint your future steps. Like I tell my kids. Okay, you got a B today. You can always start over tomorrow.

Passion Creek Book Tour and #Giveaway - Excerpt

Passion Creek by Avery Flynn
Excerpt

At that moment Sam spotted the tell-tale neon green winter coat and matching bedazzled knit hat. Only one human being in the world thought neon green needed to be jazzed up.

Mom.

Luckily, Glenda Layton's back was to them as she walked toward his office. Shit. If his mother saw them together, she wouldn't rest until she knew everything about Josie. And when it came to digging up gossip, no one was better than his mother – especially if it involved her children. Persuading Glenda not to interfere in her children's lives was about as easy as teaching a goat to use a fork and knife.
Glenda stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, her gloved hand digging through her purse. She brought out a cell phone.

"Yellow," she hollered into the phone, her mispronounced greeting carrying over the wind.
If he played it right, he could get past her. Gripping Josie's ice-cold fingers in his, he sped up the pace.
Swerving around the students shuffling to class, he hoped a few of the wrapped up co-eds would serve as a wall between them and Glenda. Ignoring Josie's squawk of protest, he hoofed it down the sidewalk.

A few feet now and they'd be past Glenda and her inquiring mind.
Right as they were steps away from his mom, she snapped the phone shut and turned.

He and Josie came face-to-face with Glenda.
She took in the other-worldly blonde beside him and her gaze traveled down to his fingers wrapped around Josie's. When she looked back up, he swore he could see grandchildren reflected in the depths of her brown eyes.
