Jumping Genres - Undeniable #Book By Tawdra Kandle

Jumping Genres

It’s book con season, meaning a few different things: first, I’m traveling almost all the
time. Second, I have the privilege of meeting readers face-to-face, getting to talk with
them.

Since I started out as a young adult author, I tend to get an influx of middle-school to
high-school age girls who have read and enjoyed The King Series. They want to talk
sweet new love and (sigh) Michael.

But since I’ve made the leap to New Adult and adult romance (both contemporary and
paranormal), my books also attract their moms.

Crossing genre lines is a tricky business. I didn’t set out to be a young adult writer;
honestly, I never read much YA after I left high school. My first story just happened to
fall into that category, but I noticed that when I went to events, I drifted more toward the
adult panels. When asked on YA groups to tell them my favorite book in that category, I
didn’t really know what to say.

My plan had been to write Rafe’s book (Undeniable) after I finished The King Series, but
then one day, the entire plot line for The Posse fell into my lap. It was without doubt an
adult romance, and the idea of tackling it was not a little daunting. Fortunately, before I
jumped into it, I wrote a short story for the anthology Eternal Summer, and it was
definitely not a YA story. I began to think maybe I was ready to be an adult—I mean, to
write adult.

I know there are people who prefer authors to stick to one genre or another. To them, I
apologize: it’s just too much fun to write in more than one category, and I would be bored
if I decided to stay in just one. Same with romance: sometimes I want to write
contemporary and sometimes, I feel the need to be a little paranormal.

Happily, in this brave new world of publishing, I don’t have to be either/or. . . I can be
both/and.

    1. There is nothing wrong with you Dolly. Some people love to read and some prefer other things. It's how we are wired.

Sometimes I get bored reading, sometimes I read until I fall asleep or fall asleep reading. It happens to everyone I suppose.

Here is a tip. Find five books you'd love to read or just five books Read a chapter from each book and see which one grabs you. Then read that one :)
