Missing The Bacchanal And Carnival Festivals - #Music

Have you been to a Caribbean Carnival - Jouvert - Festival?
Do you enjoy soca music?
What is your favorite festival to enjoy?

When I lived in my country I'd watch as the carnival season and other Caribbean festivals would come and go. I thought it would be fun to take part in the marching bands one day, but I was always so self-conscious about my skin. I never wanted to show my skin! And so I feared having to wear those tiny pieces of clothing and walking along with the bands.

I figured I'd never walk with the bands. I accepted it. There was no way I was dressing like that.

And because of the Christian culture in my country I began to shun the carnival while admiring it at the same time.

When I left my country, I realize that while I didn't miss the revelry, I really really missed the music and the food.

Ahh the music. It is hard not to move when you hear the festival music! If you not moving or tapping you finger, feet or something, then something went wrong with your receptors of art!

And I love to dance and I could bet any of them girls I could mash them up with the dancing. Did I mention I beat out 20 people to win a dance off, my very first time in a club?? Oh yes, baby girl can move!

Of course with all these years I probably out of date with the new moves, but hey, old time sinting never lose stride :)

While I wouldn't see myself wearing the costumes publicly, I love the designs and beautiful colors of the Carnival and jouvert costumes!
The Queen of the Bands costume

The Caribbean culture is rich and diverse! So much to be a part of. I wish I was able to take part in more of my cultural festivities while living hear in America. And while I don't get home sick perse, I really do miss the food and music and vibes to madness sometimes! I guess that might be home sickness ja? :)

As a woman who loves to travel, I'd love to visit all them other Caribbean islands and see how they do their Caribbean festivals and sample some of their cuisine!

I'd be one watching from the sidelines for quite a few reasons;
For me, I couldn't stand the crowd all around me and the noise out.
I don't want anyone grabbing me to wine up.
Please do not throw paint on me!!
And like I said before, I'd be the only one not in costume (not that everyone wears a costume)

If you visit any Caribbean island and get to experience the Carnival and Bacchanal, you'll never forget it!

Have you been to a Caribbean Carnival - Jouvert - Festival?

Unleashed By Emily Kimelman + $20 Amazon or B & N Gift Card

Here is to an eclectic summer reading for you!

“Give me books, French wine, fruit, fine weather and a little music played out of doors by somebody I do not know.”
― John Keats

Join the Unleashed Audio Book Contest with us and have fun hopping around and sharing!
unleashedThe Sydney Rye series of mysteries feature a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

UNLEASHED is the first book in Emily Kimelman's best selling Sydney Rye series of mysteries. When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people. But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears.

Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way. When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

The Bimbo Syndicate by Maggie Abbott - Excerpt

Have you seen or read this one as yet?

“Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.”
― Francis Bacon

bimbosydicateSaxon, Ming and Heba, glamorous girlfriends of three ruthless power brokers in the international oil industry, become instant friends over a broken zipper in the ladies' room of a five-star Paris hotel during an OPEC conference.

They don't realize they've been set up. Nor that they're being stalked by a sexy young assassin on the payroll of Ming's tough old billionaire Chinese banker. He's competing with Saxon's charming but wily Washington lobbyist and Heba's gorgeous but sinister Saudi Prince for the Grand Prize. Control of the world's oil supply.

Rumors abound that their precious Light Sweet Crude is running out, and only an elusive genius scientist, Doctor Hilda Lobinski, knows the facts. When the three smart career women catch on to the cunning plot they dub themselves The Bimbo Syndicate and set up their own agenda. Things go wrong. Pulling all their strings from his lonely exile is a former White House insider with his eyes on the money and a gruesome plan to grab it all. It's election year 2000, the atmosphere is heating up with the excitement of shifting powers and the deployment of dirty tricks. But the big movers know there's more to it than just getting elected, it's where the oil is that has their attention. And whoever owns the oil owns the world.

Excerpt:
He took the fax out and peered at it. A striking seal at the head of the
page indicated it came from an important source, and a familiar one, because the servant looked at his watch, shrugged at whatever time the hands showed, took the fax over to one of the desks and found a silver tray. He placed the fax on the tray and padded off, moving along several corridors until he arrived at Abdul's suite door, tapping on it softly.

At the small sound, Abdul was immediately awake, alert as the desert rat he was, and moved silently, not bothering with a robe. He opened the door a fraction, knowing who it would be, looked quickly at the fax before he took it and gave rapid instructions to his servant in their own language.
“Get him for me on the scrambled line, on three. Buzz me when it's through.”

The servant nodded and slipped away, closing the door gently behind him.

Abdul was riveted to the fax, reading it carefully as he picked up a loose robe from one of the huge chairs in the room. As he covered himself he glanced over at the sleeping Heba, her back turned towards him.

He went into the bathroom, studying the fax and pacing until he heard the extension ring. When he picked it up and started a conversation, it was obviously with someone he knew quite well, and his voice was low and terse. Their exchange of words was intense and in the English language.

In the semi darkness of the bedroom Heba's wide-open eyes were glistening as she strained to hear Abdul's words.

About the author:

Maggie Abbott started writing novels when she moved to Palm Springs after a long, successful show business career in Los Angeles, London, Rome, and New York. A casual job as a secretary at the William Morris Agency in Rome introduced her to the exciting scene of Cleopatra, Fellini's 8½ and The Pink Panther, with the city's influx of big stars calling by the office every day, and triggered her lifelong love affair with movies.

Over the years, Maggie has enjoyed being in the most interesting places at the best of their times, while working as the movie agent for some exciting stars: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Charlotte Rampling, Jacqueline Bisset, Martin Sheen, Raquel Welch, Christopher Plummer, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Peter Sellers, Richard Chamberlain, Peter O'Toole, Britt Ekland, Ken Russell, John Boorman, and many more. Somewhere in between, Maggie was the production assistant on three Broadway plays, and a producer and studio executive at Columbia Pictures where she developed and got production credits on two movies.

Gratin Dauphinois - The Hundred-Foot Journey

I would love to see this movie. I will have to wait for the DVD, but I think it sounds very intriguing and I can't wait to see the romance. What? Romance. I meant all that cooking of the meals so that I'll sit there with my mouth watering and wondering why I didn't have the gift of chef :)

The story line though familiar, sounds entertaining and I'm sure they'll have a few surprises. And to top it off it's French! Whooot!

Of course I will have to try this recipe: Let me know if you give it a cook!

Gratin Dauphinois - The Hundred-Foot Journey

1.5L/1 1/2 qt Milk                                              Freshly Grounded pepper
Freshly grated nutmeg                                        120g/ 4pz Grated Gruyere cheese
1 pc Bouquet garni                                             Unsalted Butter, or softened for gratin dish
2 Cloves garlic                                                  Salt and pepper
165mL / 5 1/2 oz Heavy cream
1.2kg/ 2 1/2 lbs Potatoes, firm-fleshed

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 190C (380F)
2. Coat a deep, ovenproof dish with softened butter and reserve in the refrigerator
3. Combine the milk, freshly grated nutmeg, bouquet garni, and garlic in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring the liquid to a boil, remove it from the heat, and leave it to infuse for 5 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, wash and peel the potatoes and slice them thinly, about 1/8" / 3mm. Do not rinse the potatoes as the starch is needed.
Layer the potato slices tightly in the buttered dish and season each new layer with salt and pepper.
5. Stir the cream into the hot milk then pour through a fine mesh sieve onto the potatoes. Let rest for 1 to 2 minutes. The potatoes will absorb the liquid and the level will decrease. Top up with the remaining liquid. Repeat until all the milk mixture is used. Season the top and sprinkle generously with grated cheese. Cover the dish with buttered parchment paper and foil.
6. Place it in the oven to cook for 1 hour or until the potatoes are easily pierced with a knife.
7. Remove the foil and parchment paper and return the dish to the oven to brown until the surface is golden.
8. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own, escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory's culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan's gift as a chef and takes him under her wing.

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” abounds with flavors that burst across the tongue. A stimulating triumph over exile, blossoming with passion and heart, with marjoram and madras, it is a portrayal of two worlds colliding and one boy’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he may be.

In DreamWorks Pictures’ “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” the opening of a new Indian restaurant in the south of France, next to a famous Michelin starred eatery, is nearly cause for an all-out war between the two establishments until Le Saule Pleureur’s icy proprietress Madame Mallory recognizes her rival’s undeniable brilliance for preparing masterful meals.
