Music And Education - Time For High School

What are some things you wish you were taught or had known while going through high school?

My son is in 8th grade and we are preparing for high school. I'm still learning about the American school system and I really want to get information from someone who's been through it.

I want him to choose wisely so I'm opening up the floor for him to figure out how he would like to study. I want him to have a good future with a good education as a foundation and so I'm researching and learning all I can to help him.

What are some things you wish you were taught or had known while going through high school?

I know God's got him though.

Welcome to today's music.  Five years and going strong!  I hope Monday find you with a smile and music to begin your week with light steps.

  1. I wish I had been taught more about world history and world cultures. I am 66 and my son is in his late 20's, so I can't speak of today's schooling, but they were teaching history more from source material than in my day, and I liked that. I would also encourage taking as many AP classes as possible, which will help if college is in the future. Nice, pleasant song with a great base line. Have a good week!

  2. Colette,

Have him to think of terms of what would he like to someday and build his studies around some possible future careers. He's young but it pays to prepare and be ready. There are so many kids who have no idea what they want to do. They sure do grow up fast, don't they?

  3. Great song. One to remember that there is no social promotion in high school. It is all based on credits. You can be in high school for three years and if you only have freshman level credits you are still considered a freshman. Have him get involved in a sport. It doesn't have to be football or basketball, it can be cross country or something else. Colleges are looking for well rounded people and not just grades.

  4. Tell him that there are a lot of things he wants to learn that won't be taught in high school, and that he has to read and learn those things on his own while learning the things he is taught in school.

  5. Thanks for the musical memory. Best of luck to your song in high school. Knowledge is power.

  6. I'm with John on the recommendation - and really, what he learns will boil down to the teachers. For instance, I had a *horrible* history teacher in high school, and I cannot remember actually *learning* anything. Now I soak up historical stuff like a sponge - and wish I'd learned more history in high school!

Great song choice, my friend! Thanks for the dance! :)
