Do you have Easter traditions that you share with your family?

Our family are still figuring out some of our traditions. Sometimes we grow out of traditions as our kids get older and we move on to new discoveries.

However one of our traditions is reading Easter stories together. I love finding new stories centered around the gospel to read and have discussions and Q&A.

I received this Easter Stories - Classic Tales For The Holy Season book and I get to read these stories with my children.
They are avid readers, but I still want to cuddle and read to them and surprise them with illustrations.



So far the very first story I read to them incited quite a few questions. I actually really love the first story and it sets the tone that the rest of the book will be a good read. It will be our  cuddle time reading sessions.

The first story is called The White Lily - Jane Tyson Clement - Adapted from Frances Jenkins Olcott. It's a beautiful story about a man, a boy and a dog. It shows how important it is for us to show and receive love. And how receiving that love can transform our lives. I know that the background for this story is Jesus giving us the choice of salvation and how it can change our hearts and begin to show outside in our daily lives.

The book has over 20+ stories and I can't wait to read them all with my children!

Read an excerpt from the book: Approx. 322 years after the apocalypse Chapter 1.

The body lay on a two-piece metal pyre in the center of the clearing. Nothing more than the skeleton of a table, the pyre was simply used for the display and transport of the bodies. Burning the dead was a custom from the time before. The corpse’s blue cotton, long-sleeved shirt was buttoned all the way to the top to hide his injuries, and the matching navy slacks had recently been pressed. With his hands folded over his abdomen, Wesley looked rather dashing.

Ashley wished her match had actually been dashing in life. She wondered who would wear that outfit next. Nothing was ever wasted on the island. Not even the clothes of a dead man. She herself had worn the clothes off a dead woman’s back. Squeamishness was a luxury no one could afford. Although “new” clothes were made on the island, from animal skins and the cotton grown in the farmlands, they were typically reserved for the higher ups—elders, doctors, and the like. Cotton was difficult to grow in the cold climate, and the clothes were made entirely by hand.

Once it had been worn and patched a few times by those with power, new clothing was eventually passed down to the lower branches of society. But, it wasn’t just clothing that moved on after an islander died. All of their belongings were redistributed among those in need. The dead’s family wasn’t allowed to keep anything they didn’t need. Sentimentality was a lost emotion to the islanders. Reusing everything was essential, even if the previous owner was a dead man. It had only bothered her once—the first time she’d seen one of her father’s outfits on another man. Even then, at the tender age of ten, she’d understood it was bound to happen eventually. She just hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly.

Only a week after his funeral, she’d spotted one of her neighbors walking down the road in her father’s clothes. She ran to him, hoping her father’s scent might still linger on his shirt. But the man neither embraced her nor offered her any sympathy. He only looked at her with wide eyes, the horror and disgust plain on his face. Death on the island was such a strange thing. She’d lost track of how many funerals she’d been to in her lifetime—at least one a month.

Unexpected deaths, like that of her match, added to the average. Only three of the losses had actually meant something to her—her mother, her father, and now Wesley. Her father’s funeral was, of course, devastating, made more so by the fact that they’d shared the same first name. Everything the elders said about him could have also been applied to her. How they were thankful for “Ashley’s life,” how they wished “Ashley peace.” It sent shivers down her spine. Once, she’d asked him why they shared a name. His mother’s name had been Ashley, he’d explained, as had her mother, and her father before that. On and on, down the line, the name had traveled, until it had reached Ashley. And one day, as was their tradition, it would go to her own child.

 The funeral for her mother, who had been taken by a simple cold that escalated into something much worse, was nothing more than a hazy memory. Still, Ashley missed her mother terribly and felt incomplete without her. She searched for her whenever the jasmine got caught on the wind, because her mother had loved to wear the flower behind her ear. Wesley’s funeral was a problem. She wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about it. The loss of her parents had left her feeling completely alone. She’d hoped to find love again with her match, but he’d left her terribly disappointed.

Now that he was gone, her emotions warred with themselves. Relief was the biggest player fighting for space in her mind. Relief to have escaped the abuse and the pressures of being the next elder’s wife. Guilt came in at a close second, but not because she regretted killing her match. It was because her best friend was being blamed for it.

How Overscheduling Prevents Skill Development

The parents we encounter every day in our practices are caring, conscientious, and thoughtful. They want to protect their children from negative experiences and to provide all the resources available for them to be happy. These are admirable qualities. The challenge is knowing how much is enough, and how much is too much, particularly as this relates to the child’s social life. Most parents know when their kids’ schedules are too full, but there is a lot of pressure on parents to make sure their kids don’t miss out. The combination of the pressure to keep kids ahead of the pack and the abundance of programs available makes it so difficult to resist the pull to overschedule them.

We frequently see two consequences to the overscheduled phenomenon. First, children and teens regularly communicate to us that they are stressed out and need time off. They very often say that there are too many activities in their schedule and that they have no time to “just veg out.” They tell us that whenever they are trying to relax, their parents ask them about whether they should be doing homework or practicing music or a sport instead. This makes them feel guilty or defensive, which defeats the purpose of having some time off.

The second consequence of being overscheduled is that many kids and teens do not learn how to fill time on their own, so they expect their parents to continuously structure their schedule. If there is a day with some unstructured time, they may bombard their parents with questions about what they will do that day. Alternately, they turn to an electronic device and get lost in the time warp of YouTube and monitoring the activities of their peers on social media.

What many parents don’t realize is the essential and valuable experiences children get when they have electronics free unstructured time to themselves. When adults provide the structure for their schedule, children have no need to make decisions about how to plan their day, solve a problem, manage their time, prioritize activities, and so on. Furthermore, when adults are there to guide their daily activities, it takes away the opportunity for children to make the mistake of poorly managing their time and, therefore, their opportunity to figure out a solution and learn from it. When kids need to figure out what to do with unstructured time they also learn to tolerate unexpected changes in their plans, which is an invaluable lesson. They may have an idea about what they want to do with that time, but many times it won’t go exactly as planned. That requires flexibility, problem solving, and tolerance. When kids are overscheduled, they miss out on those valuable experiences

As psychologists, we have never worked with a young adult who was struggling because he or she didn’t play enough sports, learn enough musical pieces, or speak enough languages. However, we have worked with many who never learned how to tolerate unexpected challenges, develop the confidence to solve problems on their own, or communicate with people they disagree witth. Their parents wonder why they are not taking on more responsibility and being more independent. The answer is simple: they never learned how.

Parent Tips

1.  Listen to Your Kids 
First and foremost, listen to your kids. If you are hearing your child say things like, “I’m tired”, “I don’t want to go”, and “I’m burned out” there is a chance that they are overscheduled.

2.  Provide Electronics Free Unstructured Time

Make sure there is at least one consistent chunk of time per week where your kids have unstructured time that they need to figure out what to do with. Maybe this time is Fridays after school until bedtime or maybe it is on the weekend.  Many kids will use electronics as a form of relaxation, this is different. This time is free choice, without electronics. It may be done with others or alone, whatever the child wants (playing with friends, art, music, riding a bike, etc.). This may be difficult for some kids, but don’t give in. If they say they are bored, it lets you know they need more practice thinking of things to do.

3.  Don’t Say “Yes” to Everything
This is important for both parents and kids to know. There are many great things for children and teens to sign up for, but they can’t do them all. Prioritize the child’s favorite things and family commitments. Then add only as free time allows. Remember that kids don’t typically have the foresight to consider all of the activities they may be agreeing to do. Sign-ups are often several months ahead of time. Therefore, if you just ask if they would like to do something, they may say “Yes” because it sounds great, but not think of the other things they are already committed to at the time. Parents need to monitor that closely.

4.  Support Your Child in Organizing Activities with Friends
Organizing activities with friends is a great way for children and teens to practice planning, communication, goal-setting, and organization. These are essential skills to develop. Therefore, parents should support them whenever possible.

Putting It All Together:  Parents feel pressure from very early on to provide their children with as many advantages as possible. They don’t want their kids to miss out on something they think will be “good” for them. However, as much as we fight it, theree is a limit to the number of hours in a week. When kids are overscheduled they miss out on practicing the essential skills of planning, organizing, prioritizing, decision making, and communication that are necessary when their parents are no longer there to manage their time.

Try Put Your Makeup On - Get Some Sun - Turn The #Music Up

Today was sunny! YES! YES! YES! I could put on a bathing suit and just lay out in it! It felt great! I need the sun! It's been wet , rainy and cold!  Plus I need to shake this cold or whatever it is. I'm hoping it's not lingering sinus infection because all the antibiotics are finished!
Whatever is happening. I refuse to be darkened into depression. I'm fighting it with all my might!



Today culminated the crazy week of preparation for my daughter to get her ballet photos done. Took me a week to get her hair ready! Had to take out the braids, wash and flat ironed her hair. All this while she is going to school all day. The bun works better when it's flat ironed. So we basically only do that twice a year. She loves it like that, so I might consider more often to please her.

Then it was makeup time and gosh I am not good at doing make up. I was sweating like a pig! And good makers of lush, they asked to put a wing on her eye! WHAT!!! Just taser me now!

I tried.

We weren't late to the studio. Photos were done and what a weight lifted!

What do y'all think? That's my baby girl relaxing (looks intense) after the photoshoot.

She doesn't like the makeup either. But she allows me. We work together. But the minute she gets home, she scrubs it off!!! Hahaha.

Even her bun had me sweating!

I put lipstick on with her, so she wouldn't feel alone in it :)  She tends to hang her lips off like they don't belong to her, when I have to put the lipstick on her. And gosh this time, they wanted RED!


And for just today I'm sitting on my hind without too much stress. Which will begin tomorrow Sunday and run straight into Monday! Oh well. I'll be dancing!
